But it leaves a wet, muddy slurry of spent media on the surface that you cannot coat over until it dries and is washed off – an extra step dry blasting skips. The media itself varies enormously – coal slag and garnet for heavy steel, glass bead for a satin finish, soda for delicate metal, walnut shell for wood. Metal is the most common thing we prep, and the most punishing to neglect in Florida. Rust does not stay on the surface – it spreads under paint, lifts coatings from beneath, and pits the steel. Concrete fools people because it looks solid and ready. In fact a troweled slab is smooth and sealed, with a weak top layer called laitance that coatings cannot grip. Epoxy and floor coatings need a profile – a controlled roughness – to lock into, and they need that weak layer and any old coating, glue, or contamination removed first. Blasting does both in one pass, and it reveals cracks and moisture issues before you coat instead of after. Wood is the surface where bad blasting does the most visible damage, and good blasting does some of the most satisfying restoration. Sun and moisture leave timber gray, fuzzy, and coated in dead fibers and old finish, but the wood underneath is usually sound. The key is gentleness: very low pressure and a soft media like walnut shell or fine glass lift the weathered layer without gouging the grain. Brick and mortar are deceptively fragile. Fired brick has a hard skin over a soft core, and mortar – especially old lime mortar – is softer still. Blast too hard and you blow out the joints and strip the brick face, leaving it porous and crumbling for good. The right approach is low pressure and gentle media to lift paint and grime without cutting into the masonry, always starting with a test patch. Quality industrial primers – especially two-part epoxies and zinc-rich primers – demand a clean, dry, salt-free surface.
