There are more blasting abrasive types than most folks in Columbia County realize, and picking the wrong one is the fastest way to ruin a good piece of steel. Garnet, coal slag, glass bead, soda — they all strip rust and old coating, but they do not do it the same way, and they sure do not leave the same surface behind. Out here along the I-75 corridor we blast everything from rusted hay trailers near Fort White to dock railings down on the Suwannee, and the media we load in the pot changes with nearly every job. Here is the honest part most people skip: the abrasive matters as much as the man running the nozzle.

Why blasting abrasive types matter more than the machine

People shop for a blaster like they shop for a pressure washer — bigger compressor, done. It does not work like that. The compressor moves the media; the media does the work. Two of the common blasting abrasive types can both clean a trailer frame to bare metal, but one leaves a deep, toothy profile that grips primer for years and the other leaves a polished surface that paint slides right off of. Match the abrasive to the surface and the coating, or you are just making expensive dust.

The other thing nobody tells you: the harder and sharper the media, the more it cuts — and the more it cuts, the more it can warp thin metal or chew soft material. That trade-off is the whole game. Below is how we actually choose, in plain English.

1. Garnet — the workhorse for heavy steel

Garnet is our go-to for serious steel: trailer frames, implement decks, structural beams, anything that has been fighting Florida rust for a decade. It is hard, sharp, and dense, so it bites through mill scale and pitting fast and leaves a clean, angular profile that primer loves. It can also be reclaimed and reused a few times, which keeps a big job sensible. If you are having a rusted gooseneck or a stock trailer brought back to life, garnet is usually what is in the pot. 2. Coal slag (black beauty) — cheap, aggressive, one and done

Coal slag — you will hear it called black beauty — is a single-use abrasive that cuts hard and costs less per bag than garnet. For big outdoor jobs where reclaim is not practical, like blasting a barn metal roof or a fence line, it earns its keep. The honest downside: it shatters on impact, so it makes more dust and you cannot reuse it. It also used to carry concerns about trace heavy metals, so containment and the right respirator matter. We will tell you straight when a job is a slag job versus a garnet job — same price to you, we pick by the work, not the invoice.

3. Glass bead — clean without carving

Glass bead is round, not angular. Instead of cutting the surface it peens it, leaving a soft satin finish and almost no profile. That is exactly wrong for heavy steel that needs tooth, and exactly right for cleaning aluminum, stainless, cast parts, or any piece where you want it clean but do not want to change the dimensions or carve it up. Think carburetor housings, brackets, decorative castings. Bead can be reused several times too. Wrong tool for a rusty trailer; perfect tool for a part you want to look factory-fresh.

4. Crushed glass — the lighter, cleaner cousin

Crushed (recycled) glass is angular like garnet but lighter and made from recycled bottles, so it contains no free silica and runs cleaner on the environment. It strips coatings and light rust well and leaves a decent profile without embedding much in the surface, which is handy on softer substrates. It is a single-use media, but for a lot of coating-removal jobs it is a tidy middle ground between aggressive slag and gentle bead.

5. Soda — the gentlest of the bunch

Sodium bicarbonate — baking soda, scaled up — is the lightest media we run. It removes paint, grease, and grime without touching the metal underneath, which makes it the right call for delicate work: outboard engine parts, thin sheet metal, fiberglass, even masonry where you want the coating gone and the substrate untouched. It will not put a profile down, so it is for cleaning, not for prepping bare steel for a long-haul coating. When a job calls for that feather touch we reach for soda blasting for delicate parts.

6. Steel grit & shot — shop media, not field media

Steel grit cuts and steel shot peens, and both are dense, fast, and built to be recycled hundreds of times in an enclosed blast room with reclaim flooring. That is the catch: they are shop abrasives. You do not spray steel media loose in somebody’s pasture or driveway — you would never get it all back, and loose steel rusts. Great for production work behind closed doors; not what comes off our mobile rig in the field.

How we choose the right abrasive in Columbia County

Florida makes the choice harder than a dry-climate shop deals with. Bare steel here starts flash rusting before supper, so when we blast a profile in with garnet or slag we are ready to prime it the same day — the rig blasts and coats with the same crew, same visit. Humidity also means we watch the media for moisture; damp abrasive clogs the pot and ruins the finish. And because so much of our work is farm steel, river and dock metal, and old painted brick, we are constantly switching between blasting abrasive types on the same property.

Safety drives it too. Many traditional abrasives create respirable dust, and crystalline silica is the one OSHA cares about most — their guidance on abrasive blasting is worth a read if you are tempted to rent a pot and DIY a big job. Silica sand itself is essentially banned for open blasting for that reason, which is part of why the modern blasting abrasive types above exist. When dust and cleanup are the real problem, we will often steer a customer toward dustless (green) blasting instead, where water knocks the dust down at the nozzle.

Reclaim, cleanup, and what is going back on

Two practical things decide a media as much as the metal does: can we reclaim it, and what coating is going back on afterward. On a contained shop job we can sweep up garnet or steel grit and run it again, which keeps cost and waste down. Out in a pasture or a driveway, single-use media like coal slag or crushed glass often makes more sense because nobody is reclaiming abrasive out of the grass anyway — we tarp, blast, and haul off the spent media clean. The coating matters too: a high-build epoxy wants an aggressive angular profile, while a part getting powder coat or a thin topcoat may want a lighter touch. We pick the media backward from the finish, not just the rust. That is the part a rental-yard pot will never tell you, and it is why two honest blasters can load two different abrasives for what looks like the same job.

When the abrasive isn’t the answer at all

Here is where we talk ourselves out of a job. If you have got light surface rust on a small bracket and a wire wheel plus a Saturday afternoon will handle it, we will tell you that — you do not need a blasting crew. If a part is too thin and delicate for any media without oil-canning, sometimes hand-stripping or chemical work is the smarter route. The honest “no” is how we earn the next “yes.” But when the job is real — a pitted trailer, a rusted implement, a railing eaten by river air — the right abrasive in the right hands beats anything in a spray can.
