Surface prep before powder coating is the part nobody photographs and everybody blames later. The powder goes on beautiful. It bakes out glossy. Then eight months down the road somebody in Lake City is back at his coater because the finish is lifting off a trailer tongue in sheets, and the argument starts. Nine times out of ten the powder was fine. The steel underneath it was not.

We do a fair amount of this work along the I-75 corridor – parts headed out to a coater in Gainesville, Live Oak, or down toward Ocala. Farm implements. Gate hardware. Rack frames off a shop floor in Fort White. The customer wants powder because it is tough and it looks sharp, and it is. But powder is unforgiving in a way liquid paint is not. It cannot soak into anything. It cannot hide a greasy thumbprint. It sits on top of whatever you handed it, and it tells on you.
Here is the honest part most people skip: we do not run a powder oven. We are the blasting end of that job. But we have handed off enough parts to enough coaters around Columbia County to know exactly what makes them happy and what makes them call you back. So here are the six steps that decide whether that finish is still there in five years.
1. Degrease First – Blasting Does Not Remove Oil
This is the step people reverse, and it costs them the job. If a frame has hydraulic fluid, chain lube, or road grime on it, blasting does not take the oil off. It drives it down into the pores of the metal and smears it across the areas that were clean. The abrasive picks it up and carries it to the next panel.
So the oil comes off first. Solvent wipe, degreaser, sometimes steam if it is a tractor part that has been weeping out of a seal for a decade. Silicone is the worst of the bunch. One shot of penetrating spray on a stuck bolt can leave a fisheye crater in the powder that no amount of film build will bury. 2. Blast to Bare Metal – Not “Mostly Bare”
Powder needs bare, clean steel. Not steel with a shadow of old primer in the low spots. Not mill scale you can still see the blue on. Mill scale is the tight blue-grey skin that comes off hot-rolled steel at the mill, and it is the sneakiest failure on this list, because it looks like metal and it feels like metal. It is not bonded well enough to hold a coating. Powder over mill scale looks perfect out of the oven and pops off in sheets the first time the part flexes.
For most powder work we are shooting for what the standards call a near-white finish – the vast majority of the surface free of everything, with only faint staining allowed. The SSPC surface preparation standards spell those grades out, and any coater worth using will tell you which one he wants. If he says near-white, that is what we hand him. 3. Get the Profile Right – It Is the Grip the Powder Holds
Blasting does two jobs at once. It cleans, and it roughens. That roughness is called profile, and it is measured in thousandths of an inch – the peaks and valleys the abrasive cuts into the surface. Powder locks into that texture mechanically. Too smooth and there is nothing to grab. Too aggressive and the peaks stick up through a thin powder film, which is where you get those little dull spots that rust first.
Most powder coaters want somewhere in the neighborhood of one and a half to three mils of profile, but ask yours – the number depends on his powder and his film thickness. Media choice is how we hit it. Coal slag and garnet cut an angular profile that grabs hard, which is what you want on structural steel and trailer frames. Glass bead leaves a much softer, satin texture. On aluminum or thin sheet, an aggressive angular media will warp the part or leave it looking hammered, so we back off and change media instead of changing pressure.
4. Soluble Salts and Flash Rust – The Florida Problem
Here is where Columbia County makes life interesting. Bare steel in this humidity starts flash rusting before supper. You can blast a gate frame in the morning, come back after lunch, and watch a gold haze crawl across it. That haze is rust, it is loose, and powder over it is powder over dust.
Salts are the other half. Farm equipment that has run fertilizer, anything that has been near the coast, anything that sat in a field for years – it carries invisible soluble salt on the surface. Blasting alone does not always take it off. Salt left under a coating pulls moisture through the film and blisters it from underneath, and you will not see it for a year. If a part looks like a salt candidate we wash it, and sometimes we test it.
The practical answer to both is speed. Blast and coat inside the same window. That is why we run one crew that blasts and coats – so a part is not sitting overnight in a humid shop getting worse. When a part is going out to a powder coater instead, we plan the blast around his schedule, not ours. Blasting Friday for a Monday oven is asking for trouble in July.
5. Handle It Clean, Blow It Out, Move It Fast
Once the part is blasted, your bare hands are a contaminant. Skin oil off one grab on a handrail will show up as a soft spot in the finish. Gloves from there on out, and not the ones you just used to fuel the truck.
Blow the part out properly, too. Tube frames, box tubing, gussets, and weld seams trap spent abrasive, and it will not stay trapped – it will shake loose in the oven and land in the wet powder. Clean, dry compressed air with the moisture trap actually drained. A blast of oily shop air undoes the whole morning.
Then get it wrapped or crated for the trip. A blasted frame bouncing in an open trailer down US-90 in the rain arrives with a different surface than the one that left.
6. Know When Powder Coating Is the Wrong Answer
We will tell you straight when it is not the right call, because we would rather lose the prep work than have you spend money twice.
Powder has to bake, usually somewhere around 375 to 400 degrees. That rules out a lot. Anything with bearings, seals, wiring, hydraulic lines, or rubber has to come apart first, and on old farm equipment that teardown can cost more than the coating. Cast iron with a porous surface can outgas in the oven and leave the finish full of pinholes. Galvanized parts need special handling. And if the piece is too big to fit through the oven door – which is most trailers, most gates over a certain size, most structural work – powder is off the table before we start.

What Good Surface Prep Before Powder Coating Looks Like on a Real Job
A Columbia County customer brings us a set of ornamental gate panels and a pile of hardware. He has a powder coater lined up who wants near-white with a two-mil profile. Here is how that runs.
The panels get degreased first, because the last person who worked on them fought every hinge pin with penetrating oil. Then we blast with an angular media that cuts the old paint and the light pitting without eating the scrollwork detail – the same restraint that soda blasting in Lake City is built around when a part is too delicate for anything harder. Weld seams and the inside corners of the scroll get worked deliberately, because that is where old coating hides and where the coater will find it.
Then we blow every panel out with dry air, check the corners twice, glove up, and wrap them. They go to the oven the next morning, not the next week. That is the whole trick. There is no secret product involved. It is just doing each step in the right order and not letting the parts sit.
A Note on Dust, Containment and Doing It Where You Are
Blasting throws dust, and where the work happens matters. On a shop floor or an open farm property we can run dry and move fast. Near a house, a paddock, a truck you just washed, or a neighbor close enough to care, we contain it or we run wet. Wet trades one problem for another – it knocks the dust down but leaves a muddy slurry, and mud is not something you powder over either, so it adds a wash-and-dry step. Either way, respirable silica is real and it is regulated. OSHA has a whole standard for abrasive blasting, and if a contractor is out there in a dust cloud with a paper mask, that tells you what else he cuts corners on.
The Short Version
Degrease before you blast. Go to bare metal, mill scale and all. Hit the profile your coater asks for. Beat the flash rust and the salts with speed, not hope. Handle it clean and blow it out. And know the jobs where powder was never the right answer.
